If you are going to dye hair, do it carefully

Dying the hair is maybe one of the most extreme changes in anyone's look, but it can be very dangerous for the hair: must protect it.

Have you ever thought about hair dying ? A process that a few years ago was just used to grey hair covering is now a common practice to define your own style, in the same way as buying a new jacket or wear new earrings. There is no problem about it, becauseevery person looks better in some colours than others, depending on different factors as the skin colour, the hair length, etc. However, there's a huge difference compared with the clothes or accessories: hair is a natural fiber which is part of our body, and thereforeyou must be very careful with the way you apply dyes and decolorations .

What dyes and decolorations do on the hair and why they damage it?


But, why must you be careful? After all, there's no big difference with painting any skin zone, is it? Actually,dying o decolouring the hair has nothing to do with colouring or decolouring any skin zone : each hair is an extremely thin and delicate fiber, which has some resistance and elasticity, butextremely suffers the interaction with the chemicals of which the dye is composed due to its natural keratin composition.

The hair fiber is divided transversely inthree layers: medulla, cortex and cuticle. Themedulla is a central tube which goes all the way inside the hair from root to end, and comparatively is much thinner than the other two parts. Thecortex is the main body of the hair and, therefore,is where all the treatments which take care of the hair fiber act , especially the dyes. Thecuticle , the external layer, is theprotection barrier of the hair , which is formed by scales, and that's why everything that wants to do something on the hair cortex has to go through the cuticle.
Most of dyes, to have a long-lasting result on the hair, don't just apply the stain on the cuticle because, if they did, the dye will disappear in a few washes: what they look is toget through the external scales until the hair cortex and act there. However, this process, applied forcolorations or decolorations , makes the powerful chemicals toweak the cortex of the hair and turn it weaker, because theydegrade the disulfide bridges that maintain the hair stable and resistant. This can lead to a easily breakable and falling hair when different treatments are applied in the same hair. Long story short:the dyes or oxydants are aggressive chemical treatments that, when repeated, can make the hair fall .

Does that mean that if I have thin hair I cannot colour / decolour it?


Not necessarily. The hair thickness fairly influences its resistance.The important thing is the hair health in general, and especially in the capillary cortex. If the hair cortex is weak está débil, because of a chemical treatment accumulation or for any other reason, it is not advisable use a dye as usually; but when the cortex is healthy, regardless of the hair type, shouldn't be a problem at all. On the other hand, measuring the cortex hair is easy: aweak hair is easily breakable and the tips are usually opened . Despite everything,the best is asking for advice to a professional , as your regular stylist.

I have a weak hair but I want to dye / decolour it. Is there a way to do it?

What happens to my hair in autumn?

It's not your imagination: hair falling increases in the months between September and December. Yet, don't worry! There is a solution. Autumn finally came to establish itself. Tree leaves get dropped on the pavement, the sun falls sooner and the cold reconquers the space it lost in Spring. But there's another thing about this season: at mornings, what was a clean pillow became into an entangled jungle, brushes seem more angry and hungry than before, and all our clothes don't look as tidy as before. Thebody and thetip are the medium and high parts of the hair, and its health depends mainly of the care of the cuticle, the outside layer of the hair fiber. The hair life cicle is divided in four stages: anagen (in which the hair grows for 3 to 6 years), catagen (in which the hair stops growing and rests during 1 to 3 weeks),telogen (in which the hair falls off slowly, on its own or with help of mechanical agents, and lasts for 1 to 3 months) andexogen (in which the hair follicle begins to create a new hair from the root).This cicle has as a result thatevery day fall from 50 to 150 hairs , in a normal season. Butin autumn , different causes, none of them ultimate, result in agreater number of fallings for most of people. Thehair falling is divided among two main kinds:androgenetic , which depends on the genes and causes the permanent baldness, andareata , which isalways temporary and depends on external factors (as the sunlight or the dyes) or internal (as a disease or stress). The humans, as the other mammals, change their hair  and, as well as animals like bears, dogs and rabbits, with the arrival of the cold weather, their body rejects the old summer hair and change it for  a new winter one. Another reason is that, in general, a huge part of the hair goes into catagen stage at the end of the spring and needs aproximately three months to go to its telogen and exogen stages, through the summer. When summer is over, is the time when all the dead hair from spring ends by falling off slowly. Also, in summer the sunlight has more power and affects more the scalp; it becomes thicker and denser and thus protect our head more from sunrays. When autumn comes, and while the sun decreases its intensity, the hair loses quality and falls off. Coming back from summer holidays implies that our habits change to get back to work and everydayness routine. Sometimes, this creates a stress strange in holidays, where there's more time to drive things calmly and have better life quality. This affects badly to our body and, of course, hair, making it to fall more. Again, on summer, the exposition to more sweat, sea salt, chlorine from pools and other external factors make our hair weaker and that it falls easier during the autumn. A person with iron deficit or with hormonalalterations, during autumn, will have an even more weak hair and will see it fall more than normal, especially if its long (not because it falls more, but because it's more visible). Finally, the extreme temperatures, mainly when they imply abrupt changes, will affect the hair badly. This is even worst in the change to cold temperatures, something typical of autumn.
